Almost a third of Australian men revealed they don’t always wash their hands after urinating, according to a new survey from the Food Safety Information Council.

The national survey of more than 1,200 people was conducted in August this year.

CEO Lydia Buchtmann described the findings as “disturbing,” warning that the behaviour poses a significant public health risk.

Results

  • 13% of men surveyed said they didn’t always wash their hands after a poo.
  • 28%said they didn’t always wash their hands after a pee.

Buchtmann noted that almost half of the respondents also admitted they don’t always wash their hands before handling food.

She said the habit poses a serious public health risk.

“Toilets and bathrooms are one of the favourite locations for harmful bacteria to hang out... Faeces may contain harmful bacteria, viruses and even parasites,” Buchtmann said.
