Four Aussies nominated for the 2026 Academy Awards

The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards (aka ‘the Oscars’) have been announced, with four Aussies in the mix.

Rose Byrne is up for Best Actress for ‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You’. The performance earned the Sydney-born actor a Golden Globe last week.

Fellow Australian Jacob Elordi is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in ‘Frankenstein’.

Nick Cave is nominated for Best Original Song for his work on ‘Train Dreams’, while ‘Hamnet’ production designer Fiona Crombie rounds out the local nominees.

Here are the standouts.

Sinners

Vampire thriller ‘Sinners’ has become the most-nominated film in Oscars history.

The film, which stars Michael B. Jordan, has been nominated in 16 categories, including Best Picture and Best Director.

The previous record of 14 nominations was set by the 1950 film ‘All About Eve’, and later matched by ‘Titanic’ (1997) and ‘La La Land’ (2016).

‘Sinners’ cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw has become the first woman of colour to be nominated in that category.

Costume designer Ruth E. Carter picked up her fifth nomination for the film.

The recognition makes Carter the most-nominated Black woman in Oscars history.

‘Hamnet’s’ Chloé Zhao has made history as the first woman of colour and second woman overall to be nominated twice for Best Director.

For the first time, an all-woman team is nominated for Best Sound, with Laia Casanovas, Yasmina Praderas, and Amanda Villavieja recognised for ‘Sirāt’.

Dede Gardner has become the most-nominated female producer, with a nod for ‘F1’ (when films win Best Picture, the award goes to the producers). Gardner has previously won for ‘12 Years a Slave’ and ‘Moonlight’.

Wagner Moura from ‘The Secret Agent’ has become the first Brazilian to be nominated for Best Actor.

Timothée Chalamet is up in the same category for his performance in ‘Marty Supreme’.

The nod makes the 30-year-old the youngest actor to become a three-time nominee since Marlon Brando in 1954.

Chalamet was nominated for ‘A Complete Unknown’ last year, making him the only 2026 acting nominee who was also nominated last year.
