NSW Govt wants $70 mil of ‘dormant funds’ on Opal cards

The NSW Government estimates there are 17 million cards that haven’t been used in several years, holding a balance of about $70 million funds.

The average balance per card is $4.

If passed, the Government says the money will go to “transport-related initiatives,” such as bike lockers.

Many of the ‘dormant’ opal cards are believed to be owned by visitors who put credit on an Opal card they used briefly and never registered.

The Government said there is “no way to contact people directly if they have an unregistered card.”

If passed, the bill would apply to Opal cards with money on them that have not been used in at least five years, coming into effect next year.
