International artists touring NSW will pay less to hire large venues if they choose an Australian opener, under a new government policy.
The NSW Government said the incentive is aimed at reviving the state’s live music scene, and levelling the playing field for local artists, who are “up against streaming services that favour American content”.
Musicians will pay $20,000 less to hire certain venues, as long as they have at least one Australian support act.
Discounts
The discount will apply at major locations including Accor Stadium, Allianz Stadium and the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Musicians will pay $5,000 less for the Opera House.
“The Australian artist must appear on the same stage as the international artist and be announced at the same time as the tour,” the Government said.
The incentive will be available for the next two years.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said: “Giving Aussie artists the chance to perform in front of thousands of locals will help get them into high rotation on playlists and boost their chances of becoming the next big act.”
Arts Minister John Graham said it will distribute “benefits from international touring revenue”.
“While local shows are struggling, fans are still spending big on major international acts… [the incentive] will help our local artists capture that attention,” he said.
Artist
Australian singer-songwriter Holly Rankin, who performs under the name Jack River, welcomed the move.
Rankin said the initiative offers relief “at a time when the cards are stacked against” local talent.
“A support slot on an international tour can change an artist’s career, helping us reach huge audiences in our own backyard. As streaming platforms and radio fail to spotlight local music, we’ll happily take more time on the stage,” Rankin said.
