Artist Abdul Abdullah has won the $3,000 Packing Room Prize for his portrait of fellow artist Jason Phu, titled ‘No mountain high enough’.
Every year, the Art Gallery of NSW hosts the Archibald Prize, given out to the best portrait of another person, typically a notable Australian.
The Packing Room Prize is chosen by a panel of three Art Gallery of NSW staff who receive, unpack and hang the Archibald entries.
Abdullah is one of 57 finalists for this year’s Archibald, marking his seventh time as a finalist.

He said he dedicated the work to his “best friend”, saying:
“I’ve painted him as I see him, as a ceaseless adventurer who at any one time is involved in a dozen conversations on a dozen different platforms, bringing his unique perspective to one flummoxed friend or another,” Abdullah said.
The winner of the 2025 Archibald Prize will be announced on 9 May.
