TikTok will restrict tanning content amid skin cancer concerns

From today TikTok Australia will begin removing content that glamorises tanning, as part of a new campaign to warn users about the threat of skin cancer. It will specifically remove content featuring the #SunburnChallenge hashtag.

There will also be pop-up warnings on some tanning videos posted to the platform.

This is part of a campaign with Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA). The tagline for the campaign is ‘Tanning. That’s cooked.’

The #SunburnChallenge has become a popular hashtag for users to share their sunburns online. At the time of writing, the hashtag has garnered 8.4 million views.

In September, MIA Co-Medical Directors Georgina Long and Richard Scolyer called on media platforms and social media influencers to promote healthier narratives around tanning.

One Australian is diagnosed with melanoma every 30 minutes, according to MIA.
