Deadly storm in U.S.
A major snowstorm has killed at least 62 people in the U.S, including at least 28 in Buffalo, New York. Tens of thousands of people have been left without power and thousands of flights have been cancelled.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul called the storm “the blizzard of the century” and compared it to a “war zone”. The cold conditions are expected to continue.
China’s border to open
The Chinese Government has announced it will no longer require inbound travellers to quarantine and will remove caps on the number of passengers arriving on international flights. The changes will take effect on 8 January.
It comes as China rapidly removes its COVID restrictions after years of strict policies. Its National Health Commission recently stopped publishing daily case numbers despite a surge in infections.

Paris shooting
A 69-year-old man killed three people and injured three more in a shooting at a Kurdish cultural centre in Paris.
French officials said the man was motivated by a “pathological” hatred of foreigners, setting out specifically to kill “non-Europeans”.
The man has a history of racial violence. He had been awaiting trial over a sword attack at a Paris migrant camp, but was released on bail a few days before the shooting.
Pelé’s family gather at hospital
The family of Brazilian football star Pelé have gathered with him in hospital after reports the 82-year-old’s cancer had advanced.
Pelé is Brazil’s leading men’s goal scorer and one of the game’s all-time great players, having won three World Cups.
