Leaders from the world’s leading and emerging economies will meet in Bali, Indonesia from Tuesday for the Group of Twenty’s (G20) annual Summit.
will be at the Summit, as well as U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
What is the G20?
The G20 is a summit connecting 20 of the world’s biggest economies. It has 20 members, and one permanent guest (Spain).
Members account for over 80% of the world’s, 75% of global trade, and 60% of the global population.

What is the summit?
Every year since 2008, a summit has been held for the leaders of all member and guest economies of the G20.
The host of the G20 Summit rotates between members each year. Indonesia is hosting this year.
Meetings with China
Australia’s relationship with Beijing has been strained in recent years. This is largely due to sanctions imposed by China on Australian exports, aggression on the Taiwan Strait, and China’s failure to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Albanese this week said he would welcome a meeting with Xi in Bali. Prior to the G20 summit, Albanese will be in Cambodia for the East Asia Summit.
What about Biden?
White House officials confirmed this week that Biden and Xi would meet on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
This will be the first time the pair meet in-person since Biden became President, and follows comments from Biden that the U.S. would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.
Biden and Xi are expected to discuss regional and global issues, which could include the Russia-Ukraine war, and aggression around Taiwan.
Will Putin be there?
won’t be there in person, but Russian officials said he may participate virtually at the summit. Instead, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will lead the Russian delegation in Bali.
previously said he wouldn’t accept an invitation to the summit if Putin was there. Zelenskyy is expected to take part virtually.
