Rain is forecast across 90% of the country over the coming days as a 5,000km ‘cloudband’ makes its way from WA’s north to south-east Australia.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), a ‘northwest cloudband’ is an extensive layer of air and moisture from over the Indian Ocean that can bring widespread rain to much of the country.

The currentover Australia started in the Kimberly region, in north Western Australia, and is moving towards Australia’s eastern states.

Around 100mm of rainfall has been recorded in parts of Victoria, WA, and Tasmania since Wednesday.

Cloudbandcan continue for up to a week. However, the BOM said it expects this week’s event to pass by Sunday.

Winter

The BOM also released its Winter Forecast this week.

After a “warmer than usual” autumn, the BOM has predicted above-average temperatures over the coming months.

It’s forecasted a “high chance” of “historical temperatures” from June to August.

“Above average” rainfall is also forecasted for parts of southern, central, and western Australia this winter.
