Female participation in the workforce hit a new record in July, according to new figures released from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The proportion of women aged over 15 who were employed or looking for a job rose to 63.5% in July.

Around 40,000 women started working full-time jobs in July, compared to 20,000 men.

Australia’s unemployment rate fell to 4.2% in July, down from 4.3% in June. The unemployment rate measures the percentage of people who were looking for work but could not find any.

The number of employed people remains high, with employment in Australia rising by 25,000 people in July.

The number of unemployed people decreased by 10,000 people.
