New South Wales will become the first Australian state to launch digital birth certificates next year.
Young people aged 16 to 21 will be prioritised in the first stage of the rollout in March.
The digital document will be “built to the international standard,” according to the NSW Government.
It said the measure will remove the inconvenience of “having to dig through drawers and storage boxes for the paper version”.
Certificates
The digital birth certificate will be available via the Service NSW app from March 2026.

16 to 21-year-olds born in NSW will be the first group eligible to access the new feature, before a wider rollout is expected.
NSW Digital and Customer Services Minister Jihad Dib said the scheme will help users prove their identity, and give them “more control of [their] personal data through better consent and privacy measures.”
“During natural disasters, we often help people whose birth certificates and other documents have been destroyed,“ Dib noted.
“A digital version provides a solution for those who need to verify their identity quickly to access services and apply for grants, rather than waiting for a replacement and delaying timely support.”
Participation in the new service will be optional.
