Coyle joined the army reserves in 1987, and most recently served as the Chief of Joint Capabilities.

In that job, she was responsible for overseeing Australia’s “space and cyber operations”.

From July, Coyle will be the first woman to command Australia’s Army, and will answer to the head of the Defence Force.

At a press conference, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “Susan said to me, you cannot be what you cannot see.”
