Last week, TDA received messages asking us to explain the “new rules” for P-platers.
Some of the changes our readers had seen reported included a new driving curfew, and a new limit on the number of passengers for P-platers.
However, TDA can confirm these changes are not real.
So, how did we find out?
Verification
TDA started by reviewing several websites discussing the “new changes” to find out what they were.
Then, we worked to verify the information at the source.
First, we looked at the websites for the transport authorities in each state and territory, searching through press releases for any mention of these changes. However, we found no official confirmation.
Your contribution ensures The Daily Aus can continue doing the work you love.
Our next step was to contact the transport authorities directly.
First, we contacted Transport NSW, which confirmed these changes would not be enforced.
This led us to call up Victoria, then Western Australia, and eventually the other states and territories.
After hours of calls, emails and follow ups, every jurisdiction confirmed there will be no changes to road rules for P-platers in August.
Road rules
In Australia, the National Transport Commission develops a country-wide set of traffic guidelines.
Each state and territory uses the rules as the basis for their own laws, and can adjust them to their local needs.
States and territories are responsible for enforcing their laws and setting penalties for violations.
