What's the latest on the U.S. and Iran peace talks?

U.S. President Donald Trump says peace talks with Iran are “proceeding,” but that he’s told his representatives not to rush anything.

It comes a day after Trump said an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz had been “largely negotiated” by both sides.

The critical oil passageway has been closed to most vessels since the conflict began on 28 February.

A U.S. blockade on Iranian ships in the Strait would “remain in full force” until an agreement is “reached, certified, and signed,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

PGSA

Earlier this month, Iran launched the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA).

According to Iran’s state outlet PressTV, the PGSA will email vessels intending to transit the Strait of Hormuz outlining rules andregulations for passage.

Ships will also be required to obtaina transit permit before crossing.

In a map shared by the PGSA on 21 May, the authority said the Strait of Hormuz falls within its management zone, which it described as under Iranian armed forces oversight.

However, on Sunday he said “both sides must take ‌their time and get it right.” The U.S. and Iran remain at odds on several issues, including Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said the country is “not seeking nuclear weapons” and “not seeking unrest in the region”.

In a post to Truth Social on Monday,Trump then shared that “negotiations are proceeding,” but that a U.S. blockade of the Strait will remain in effect until an agreement is reached.

There was no immediate response from Iran, but state media said the U.S. was still obstructing parts of a potential deal.

Iran’s navy granted around 30 ships passage through the Strait on Monday (down from around 140 before the conflict), state-affiliated Fars News Agency reported.

The timeframe of ceasefire talks is unconfirmed, with Trump saying a peace agreement “isn’t even fully negotiated yet.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met virtually with state and territory leaders for National Cabinet on Monday, as he confirmed Australia's fuel supply remains secure well into July.

He also warned the end of conflict won’t mean an end to economic pressures.

“There will be a period of time before ships are able to go through the Strait of Hormuz,” Albanese said.
