A new study has found people scrolling on their phone on the toilet could be at increased risk of developing haemorrhoids.

Haemorrhoids are swollen veins that appear in and around the anus, causing bleeding and discomfort.

In a post to Instagram, researcher Dr Trisha Pasricha said people should “set a two TikTok limit” when they go to the bathroom.

A team of U.S. researchers surveyed 125 people who had booked colonoscopies at a medical centre in Boston.

They found 66% used smartphones on the toilet, primarily to read the news and scroll social media.

When the researchers adjusted their data to remove the influence of age, diet, and exercise, they found using a phone on the toilet increased people’s risk of haemorrhoids by 46%.

They attributed the risk to the pressure of sitting on the toilet seat for longer than intended.

Young people were found to be more likely than other age groups to bring their phones to the bathroom.
