The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has announced the theme for the new $5 note: “Connection to Country”.
A new design created under the theme will replace the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
The RBA said: “The imagery on the $5 banknote should recognise the enduring connection that First Nations peoples have to Country — as an emotional and spiritual connection, as much as a physical one.“

Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait debuted on the $5 note in 1992, marking her 40th anniversary of taking the throne.
Following the Queen’s death, the RBA announced the note’s design would be changed following consultation with the Federal Government and First Nations Australians.
Now, the RBA has announced the theme of “Connection to Country,” which will “inspire an artwork”.
“The tone for the banknote is of a hopeful future… As times change, so do our banknotes,” it said.
