The latest ‘Newspoll’, conducted for The Australian, found 22% of voters would rank One Nation first on their ballot, while 21% would rank the Liberal-National Coalition Opposition first.
It marks the first time the minor party has surpassed the Coalition in the Newspoll.
Opinion polls
In Australia, media companies commission polling firms to conduct research about people’s voting intentions and top concerns.
For example, News Corp has its Newspoll, conducted by Pyxis Polling & Insights, while Nine newspapers use Resolve Strategic.
Australia has a preferential voting system. As such, polling companies gather data about voters’ top choice (primary vote) and then calculate the most likely winner after the flow of preferences to the major parties, called the two-party-preferred basis (2PP).
One Nation

One Nation was founded by Pauline Hanson in 1997. The party has four federal senators, including Hanson.
One Nation’s policies include significantly reducing the number of people allowed to migrate to Australia each year, and limiting the number of countries whose citizens can move here.
The party’s website says it is “the only political party to question climate science,” and that it is in favour of Australia withdrawing from the Paris Agreement.
New poll
NewsPoll asked more than 1,200 people who they would rank first if they had to vote tomorrow in a House of Representatives election (One Nation’s only lower house seat is held by Barnaby Joyce).
22% of respondents said they would vote for One Nation as their first preference, 21% said they would vote for the Coalition, and 32% would vote for Labor.
The Opposition and the Government got a combined primary vote of 53% — the lowest amount of support for major parties in the poll’s history.
