The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has finished its recount of the Sydney seat of Bradfield, declaring independent candidate Nicolette Boele the winner by 26 votes.

The result comes more than a month after the 3 May federal election.

Boele narrowly defeated Liberal candidate Gisele Kapterian.

The AEC conducted the recount after the initial count fell within a margin of fewer than 100 votes.

The Liberal Party could challenge the result in the Court of Disputed Returns.

Response

Nicolette Boele thanked her supporters in a social media post.

"As Bradfield's first independent Member of Parliament, I'm dedicated to serving this community with integrity, courage and care."

The Liberal Party has held Bradfield since it was first created.

Retiring MP and former Liberal Minister in the Morrison Government Paul Fletcher had been the local member since 2009.

Tech executive Gisele Kapterian had tried to hold onto the seat, despite a surge in teal support since the 2022 poll.

In a statement, Kapterian said the result had switched from declaring her a winner in the original count to Boele in the recount.

"I will now carefully review the two counts," Kapterian said on social media, without conceding the loss.

The AEC said counting staff had conducted the recount, overseen by candidate-appointed scrutineers.

It described the recount process as "methodical" and "very transparent".

In 2016, Labor won the Queensland seat of Herbert by 37 votes.
