Three earthquakes felt in NSW within 10 hours of each other

Three earthquakes were felt in north-east NSW overnight.

None have caused any damage.

Earthquakes

The first earthquake was felt in central northern NSW, north-west of Dubbo, at around 11pm. It had a magnitude of 3.8.

The second earthquake was felt in Muswellbrook, north-west of Newcastle, at around 2.30am. Its magnitude was 3.7, and more than 150 people reported they felt it.

The third earthquake happened in Bulahdelah, north-east of Newcastle, at around 8am.

This earthquake had a magnitude of 3.1, and was felt by almost 100 people.

Geoscience Australia says an average of two earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 3.0 occur weekly in Australia.

Senior Duty Seismologist Hugh Glanville told TDA that the occurrence of multiple earthquakes was “rare,” and that they weren’t connected.

Glanville said none of the earthquakes would cause any damage as they were all under the size of any significant impact.
