Australian cricket captain Alyssa Healy announces retirement

Australian captain Alyssa Healy has announced she is set to retire from all forms of cricket.

Healy’s final match will be a Test match against India at the WACA in March. She has played for Australia on 295 occasions across 16 years.

That Test will conclude the upcoming multi-format series between the two teams.

Career

Healy made her international debut in 2010 at the age of 19. Since then, she has been Australia’s first-choice wicketkeeper, and has captained the side since 2023.

Under her leadership, Australia has won more than 80% of their matches and dominated England in the 2024-25 Women’s Ashes.

Across her career, Healy has won seven World Cups and a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Her standout innings remains her 170 runs in the 2022 ODI World Cup final, the highest score in a men’s or women’s final.

The decision

Healy said the upcoming series in February and March against India will mark her final appearances.

The 35-year-old said the decision came after reflecting on her motivation to keep playing.

“I’m still passionate about playing for Australia, but I’ve somewhat lost that competitive edge that’s kept me driven since the start,” Healy said. “So the time feels right to call it a day.”

Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg said Healy is “one of the all-time greats of the game”.

The upcoming series against India is multi-format, meaning the two sides will face off in three formats of cricket (T20, ODI, Test).

Healy will not play the T20 matches against India, allowing the side more preparation time ahead of this year’s T20 World Cup. Should she play in the three ODIs and one Test, Healy will end her career on 299 appearances.

Healy said missing the tournament was difficult but necessary.

“Representing my country has been an incredible honour,” she said. “I’m grateful for one last series in the green and gold.”

What's next?

Australia’s series against India will begin with a T20 match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 15 February.

The Test match will be held in Perth from 6-9 March.

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will be held in the UK in June.
