Lachlan Kennedy breaks 10-second barrier

Lachlan Kennedy has become the second Australian to run 100m in under 10 seconds.

The 21-year-old clocked a legal time of 9.98 at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi on the weekend.

The only other Australian to achieve the feat is Patrick Johnson, who set the national record of 9.93 in Japan in 2003.

In a comment on Kennedy’s Instagram, Johnson said: “Welcome to the sub 10 club, watch out world!”

Kennedy said he was “super-stoked” with the result. “I can finally say I have run nine [seconds].”

Kennedy’s result on the weekend was recorded with a legal tailwind of 0.7m/s. Any times recorded with a tailwind of 2.0m/s or faster is considered illegal and not eligible to be considered for records.

He’s currently ranked 18th in the world for men’s 100m sprint.

What's next?

Kennedy will next be in action at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet in the Czech Republic on 24 June.

At the meet, he will take on fellow Aussie sprinting sensation Gout Gout in the 200m.
