Former NRL star Matt Utai is in hospital after being shot outside a home in Sydney’s southwest this morning.

Emergency services were called to the suburb of Greenacre at around 6am in response to a driveby shooting.

NSW Police confirmed a 44-year-old man was treated at the scene. They did not name the victim, but it’s widely reported to be Utai.

Utai played 167 NRL games with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Wests Tigers between 2002 and 2013.

Context

According to a statement from NSW Police, a 44-year-old man was shot multiple times outside a Greenacre home by suspects who fled in an SUV.

He was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Police were later called to a car fire in nearby Wiley Park, where they found a burnt-out SUV.

The vehicle has been seized for forensic examination, with detectives believing the two incidents are linked.

Matt Utai

New Zealand-born footballer Matt Utai made his NRL debut with the Bulldogs in 2002.

The powerful winger played a starring role in the Bulldogs’ premiership-winning season in 2004, scoring two tries in the Grand Final.

After eight seasons with the Bulldogs, Utai signed with Wests Tigers in 2011, where he played three seasons.

He also represented New Zealand and Samoa internationally.
