Uganda’s parliament is considering a law which would make it a crime to identify as LGBTQ+. Uganda already bans homosexual sex, but human rights organisation Human Rights Watch believes this would be the first time an African country could make it illegal to identify as LGBTQ+.

The proposed law would carry jail penalties of up to 10 years. It would also criminalise performing a marriage ceremony for LGBTQ+ people and promoting or aiding same-sex relations in any way. It comes after months of increasingly hostile language from the government towards the LGBTQ+ community as well as a recent spate of arrests and a rise in anti-LGBTQ+ violence.
