The sale of petrol and diesel cars would be banned in 27 European countries from 2035, under new legislation approved by the Parliament of the European Union (EU) this week. The legislation sets out a plan to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions from cars and vans in the EU, which will support its target of net-zero emissions by 2050.

The legislation was first proposed in 2021 and will now require the formal endorsement of the European Council before it can become a law. There were 340 members of the European Parliament that supported the measure, and 279 in opposition. 21 abstained from voting.
