Poland shoots down Russian drones for violating airspace

Polish Government officials have confirmed the country’s army has shot down Russian drones in its airspace.

According to Poland’s Armed Forces, Russia was attacking Ukraine when Polish airspace was “repeatedly violated by drone-type objects.”

“Defensive procedures were immediately activated,” it said.

Poland is part of NATO, a military alliance of 32 European and North American countries.

The organisation’s founding treaty states: “An attack against one Ally is considered as an attack against all Allies.“

“Aircraft have used weapons against hostile objects. We are in constant contact with NATO command,” he added.

The Polish Government has called for “calm,” as military forces conduct ground searches for downed drones.

NATO

Poland shares a border with Ukraine.

Unlike Ukraine, it is a member of NATO.

NATO countries are bound to go to war on each other’s behalf.

Earlier this year, NATO members agreed to increase GDP (the total value of a country’s goods and services) defence spending to 5% by 2035, up from 2%.

Australia is not a NATO member, but is considered an official “partner”.
