The latest on the Israel-Iran war

Israel and Iran have exchanged further strikes in recent hours.

Iran hit multiple sites in Israel, including a major hospital, and Israel struck multiple sites in Iran, including nuclear facilities. Both sides said they were aiming for military targets.

Following the hospital strike, Israeli leaders said they would increase the intensity of strikes on Iran and target Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

It’s the latest escalation in hostilities that began last Friday, and it’s not yet clear if the U.S, Israel’s closest ally, will get involved.

So far

Last week, the UN’s nuclear watchdog raised concerns that Iran was not able to show evidence “that its nuclear material was not being diverted for... military use”.

The following day, Israel struck nuclear and military targets across Iran, including residences of military officials in Tehran apartment buildings. Iran struck back on Israeli cities including Tel Aviv and Haifa.

Iranian authorities report more than 220 deaths, including civilians and military officials. Israeli authorities report 24 civilian deaths.

Israel says it has been targeting military and nuclear infrastructure, including in Tehran. Its strikes have also hit residential buildings in the city, killing civilians.

Earlier today, the Israeli Defense Forces told residents of two western Iranian towns to evacuate ahead of strikes on an inactive reactor.

Following this, Iran struck Soroka Hospital, a major hospital in southern Israel, injuring dozens and causing “extensive damage” to the building.

According to Iranian state media, the strikes were targeting a military site next to the hospital.

Comments

Following Iran’s strike on the hospital, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz posted to X, saying: “[Ayatollah Ali] Khamenei will be held accountable for his crimes.”

“The Prime Minister and I have instructed the IDF to increase the intensity of attacks… against government targets in Tehran in order to remove threats to the State of Israel and undermine the Ayatollah’s regime.”

In a separate post, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “We will exact the full price from the tyrants in Tehran.”

Both nations have indicated the war will continue.

This week, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters he delivered an “ultimate ultimatum” to Iranian leaders to stop the development of nuclear assets.

He said he had not yet decided whether the U.S. would strike Iran.

The United Nations Security Council is expected to meet on Friday in an emergency session to discuss the escalation.
