A Liberal candidate has been dropped by the party ahead of next month’s election after a series of controversial comments made on a podcast last year resurfaced.
Benjamin (Ben) Britton was running for the seat of Whitlam, a safe Labor seat in southeast NSW.
A spokesperson for the Liberal Party said the views Britton expressed are “inconsistent with the party’s position”.
Benjamin Britton
Britton previously contested the seat of Whitlam at the last federal election as a representative of the United Australia Party.
At this election, he was contesting the seat as a Liberal Party candidate.
Britton was interviewed on a conservative podcast in December last year.
During this interview, he claimed that to “fix” Australia’s defence force, women need to be removed from combat corps.

He said:
“[Women’s] hips are being destroyed because they can’t cope with the carrying of the heavy loads and the heavy impacts that are required from doing combat-related jobs.”
Britton also claimed that “diverse and equity quotas, and Marxist ideologies and woke ideologies [have taken] precedence over the defence of our nation.”

Over the weekend, it was announced that Britton had been dropped as a candidate by the Liberal Party, just weeks out from the federal election.
In a statement, the party said the views had not been “previously disclosed” and are “inconsistent with the party's position”.
The Liberal Party will now endorse former NSW MP Nathaniel Smith for the seat of Whitlam at the upcoming election.
