The National Party is choosing the person to lead the party for the next term of Parliament.
Queensland Senator Matt Canavan is contesting the current leader, David Littleproud, for the top job.
As the junior coalition partner, the Nationals are responsible for choosing their leader separately from the Liberal Party, which is hosting its own leadership ballot tomorrow.
Here’s what you need to know.
Leadership ballot
While the Coalition lost last Saturday’s federal election, National leader David Littleproud held on to his seat.
Deputy leader Perin Davey is on track to lose her NSW Senate seat.
It’s customary for the party to choose a new team after an election defeat, meaning all leadership positions are open.

David Littleproud has been in Federal Parliament since 2016, representing the electorate of Maranoa in Queensland.
Littleproud was elected leader of the Nationals in 2022 following the Coalition’s election defeat.
Under his leadership, the Nationals have pushed for new powers to break up two major supermarkets, stronger regional funding commitments and biosecurity measures.
Matt Canavan
Matt Canavan has been a Queensland Senator since 2013.
He was Resources Minister under former Coalition prime ministers Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison.
Canavan announced he was contesting the Nationals leadership late last week during a live stream to his social media followers.
If Canavan is successful, he will be the first leader to sit in the Senate since the 1920s.
